The Only Thing to Fear…

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

74 Days until Graduation

Does that scare you?  Does that excite you?  A little of both?  I’d like to dispel  a myth that I have been getting from quite a few seniors:  you are not the only one “behind” in the job search process.   In other words, your peers most like have no idea what they are going to do after graduation either.

That’s okay and that’s normal.  There is absolutely no shame in that.  Frustration, fear and anxiety are all a normal part of graduating.  As are excitement, grief and exhilaration.  Life is full of emotional tension…it’s the way it is.

Having (hopefully) dispelled the myth, I want to encourage you to take focused action.    Finding a job is hard.  Going to grad school may seem easier, but even after you get that advanced degree, you’re going to have to get a job.

If you need a jumpstart in your job search or just want to run some ideas by us, come to our office, we would be happy to assist and hopefully equip you to face your future with less fear and more excitement.

Koch Internship Program

SPRING – SUMMER – FALL – Application Deadline March 1, 2010
Washington, DC

The Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation Internship Program was established to develop the next generation of liberty-minded leaders and entrepreneurs. Over the course of the program, Interns engage in key Foundation projects while learning and applying Market-Based Management®.

The project assignments cover fascinating areas including policy research, leadership and talent development, grassroots education, marketing, and network development. This hands-on experience gives interns the chance to explore the non-profit sector while applying the management philosophy they are learning from the Foundation, and allows them to build a network of like-minded friends and associates.

Each Intern is assigned a Foundation mentor for the duration of the program. The mentor will guide the Interns through assignments, assist them in learning the management framework and applying it to their non-profit work, and encourage them to become effective entrepreneurs for social change.

Spring and fall Internships are part-time and flexible, but Interns must be available at least 20 hours each week, including all day on Tuesdays. Summer Interns are also part-time, but Interns work regular schedules, 8:30am-5:30pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Spring, summer, and fall Interns do not work on Thursdays. Spring and fall Interns are paid an hourly rate of $12.00. Summer Interns are paid an hourly rate of $13.00. Metro assistance is available only for summer Interns. Unfortunately, housing is not provided.

If you have any questions about the Koch Internship Program, contact recruiting@cgkfoundation.org.

Law School or Wait?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

As many of you know, I am a lawyer.  I’ve gone to law school, passed the bar and practiced for a few years.  What few of you know is that I graduated from law school during a recession and although I received an offer from a mid-sized firm in Chicago, my offer was rescinded one week prior to the bar exam due to economic conditions.  In other words, I know that it’s tough out there for lawyers.

The current economy makes my situation look positively rosy.  I’ve actually read that it is the toughest market for lawyers in over 50-years.  The Economist had an article (linked below), that had the impertinence to write: WHAT do you say to a recent law-school graduate? “A skinny double-shot latte to go, please.”

Am I trying to convince you NOT to go to law school?  Absolutely, not.  If God is calling you into the legal field, then go.  However, it won’t hurt you to take a year or two off to make sure this is what you want to do, and perhaps hope for better hiring conditions.

What I would hate to see is a person who goes to law school and spends $100,000 only to face unemployment after graduation.

The economic downturn has hit the legal market hard.  Read these articles and decide for yourself.

The Economist:  Laid-off Lawyers, Cast-off Consultants

The NY Times:  Unemployed and Struggling Lawyers seek Solace
